If something you deeply want feels difficult, or like it’s taking far longer than it should, that doesn’t mean it’s not meant for you.
Yet that’s often the conclusion we jump to.
When progress is slow, when fear shows up, or when the path feels harder than we expected, it’s easy to wonder if we’re on the wrong track altogether.
I’ve asked myself that question many times.
Especially when I was learning to surf.
The Growth That Almost Didn’t Happen
There were countless moments when I considered giving up.
My inner dialogue was brutal.
I told myself I wasn’t progressing fast enough.
I questioned whether I was capable.
Fear and discomfort seemed to dictate every decision I made in the water.
At the time, my only goal was simple:
I wanted to be able to ride down the line of a wave.
That’s it.
I wasn’t dreaming about surf retreats.
Or imagining helping other women navigate fear and self-doubt.
I certainly wasn’t envisioning the role surfing would eventually play in my life.
I just wanted to catch a wave.
What I Couldn’t See At The Time
Looking back, I can see that surfing wasn’t just teaching me a skill.
It was initiating me into a different version of myself.
The fear.
Frustration.
Setbacks.
Self-doubt.
All of it became part of the lesson.
And ironically, the very struggles that made surfing so difficult became the reason I can now support other women through similar experiences.
If learning to surf had been easy, much of the meaning would have been lost.
The challenge itself became part of the gift.
Sometimes Difficulty Has A Purpose
We often assume that things that are aligned should feel effortless.
Sometimes they do.
But sometimes the most transformative experiences require dedication, patience, and commitment.
Not because we’re doing something wrong.
But because the process is shaping us for what’s ahead.
There are lessons we can only learn by moving through uncertainty.
There is confidence that can only be built through experience.
And there is wisdom that can only come from staying with something long enough to understand why it mattered.
Trusting The Process Of Personal Growth
One of the hardest parts of any growth journey is that we rarely understand the purpose while we’re living it.
We want certainty
& guarantees.
We want to know exactly where the road is leading.
But growth doesn’t usually work that way.
Sometimes the invitation is simply to keep showing up.
To keep taking the next step,
& trust that the process is unfolding even when the outcome isn’t visible yet.
If You’re Wondering…
Why is personal growth so difficult?
Growth often requires us to move beyond familiar patterns, beliefs, and comfort zones. Discomfort doesn’t necessarily mean you’re on the wrong path, it can be a sign you’re expanding.
How do I trust the process when I can’t see results?
Focus on the next step rather than the entire outcome. Progress is often happening beneath the surface before it becomes visible.
Does fear mean I shouldn’t do something?
Not necessarily. Fear can be a sign that something matters deeply to you. Learning to distinguish fear from genuine danger is an important part of growth.
How do I know if something is meant for me?
Rather than looking for certainty, pay attention to what continues to call you forward, even when the journey feels challenging.
An Invitation
If you’ve been feeling called toward something bigger, but fear, uncertainty, or self-doubt keep getting in the way, you’re not alone.
Sometimes growth requires us to step away from the noise long enough to hear ourselves clearly.
That’s exactly why I created Reconnect Retreats: to help women reconnect with themselves, move through discomfort with support, and create space for clarity, confidence, and transformation.
If you’ve been feeling that nudge, perhaps this is your invitation to listen.
