On a spiritual path we’re supposed to want for nothing, embrace minimalism and detach from worldly pleasures. At least that was my first impression of living a more connected life. I felt like it wasn’t ok to want more, like I was just supposed to accept anything life threw my way,and bury any feelings of discomfort, sadness, anger, basically anything less than happiness or acceptance.

Coping with life in that way was one of my biggest mistakes, so in turn it became one of my biggest lessons. Turns out, it’s ok to go after what you want and not just settle for what you can get. It’s still a spiritual practice when decisions and actions are taken from a place of deep inner alignment.

Not settling can look like:

  • Saying no to opportunities, people, or plans that don’t feel aligned.
  • Setting boundaries that make you feel more comfortable.
  • Letting go of what no longer serves you.
  • Breaking your own ‘rules’ when it feels safe to.

Going after want you want can look like:

  • Setting intentions for yourself and your life.
  • Taking action that reflects the life you’re creating for yourself.
  • Changing your mind when something starts to feel unaligned.
  • Following your intuition along the way.

You don’t need to reason, rationalize or explain yourself to anyone. No one has to ‘get it’ or validate it. You only need your own stamp of approval.

The thing is, no matter how many retreats we do or hours we spend on our yoga mats, we’re spiritual beings having a very human experience. This means we’re still going to experience a range of emotions, think thoughts that don’t serve us, and make many many mistakes along the way.

It’s time to go for what you want, and stop settling for what you can get.
